EDITING SAMPLE AND ASSIGNMENTS

Discretion is the better part of a copyeditor's obligation. Many clients do not wish it to be known that a third party contributed to her/his well written document, which, of course, is fine. My clientele includes college professors (most of whom, by the way, are native English speakers) and research scientists in Mexico, Brazil and the Philippines.

Here is a brief article from the local newspaper to illustrate my editing style:

Before

An additive designed to make gasoline burn cleaner has apparently left sites polluted by the MTBE compound, as well as politicians, bureaucrats and environmentalists, arguing over who is responsible for cleaning it up. (thirty-three words)
(Associated Press, 7 April 2000)

After

Politicians, bureaucrats and environmentalists are arguing over who is responsible for cleaning up sites polluted with MTBE, a compound added to gasoline to make it burn more cleanly. (twenty-eight words)

I am at liberty to mention that I have edited numerous books most of them camera-ready for the International Atomic Energy Agency and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, comprising technical documents (TECDOCs), training manuals and proceedings volumes. TECDOCs are large-format (A-4) paperbacks (usually 100250 pages) that report either results of research in the developing world sponsored by IAEA, or state-of-the-art reviews of topics of current interest provided by consultants. Proceedings volumes run to 300 to 500 pages:

  • Sewage Sludge and Wastewater for Use in Agriculture, IAEA-TECDOC-971 (1997).
  • Management of Nutrients and Water in Rainfed Arid and Semi-arid Areas, IAEA-TECDOC-1026 (1998).
  • Improving Yield and Nitrogen Fixation of Grain Legumes in the Tropics of Asia, IAEA-TECDOC-1027 (1998).
  • Use of 137Cs in the Study of Soil Erosion and Sedimentation, IAEA-TECDOC-1028 (1998).
  • The Use of Nuclear Techniques in the Management of Nitrogen Fixation by Trees to Enhance Fertility of Fragile Tropical Soils, IAEA-TECDOC-1053 (1998).
  • Comparison of Soil Water Measurement Using the Neutron Scattering, Time Domain Reflectometry and Capacitance Methods, IAEA-TECDOC-1137 (2000).
  • Management and Conservation of Tropical Acid Soils for Sustainable Crop Production, IAEA-TECDOC-1159 (2000).
